Students in Ms. DeMaio’s algebra class at Hauppauge Middle School celebrated Pi Day by measuring for pi, or 3.14 centimeters, using everyday objects. Looking at the circumference and diameter of various circular objects, including canisters, cookie tins and potted plants, the students divided the two values, aiming to get the value of pi.
Through this activity, the students discovered that no matter the size of the circle, dividing the circumference by the diameter consistently resulted in a value of pi, showing that pi is a constant that applies to all circles, big or small.
