Hauppauge Middle School recently hosted its second annual Coding Skills Dash, an exciting event that brought fourth and fifth graders from Bretton Woods, Pines and Forest Brook elementary schools to the middle school for a hands-on coding experience. The event, designed for students interested in joining the elementary school hackathon team, allowed them to practice in an environment similar to a real hackathon.
The event was driven by seventh and eighth grade hackathon team members, who each created two coding challenges for the younger students to tackle. After completing the challenges, the middle school students also took on the role of judges, offering valuable feedback and guidance.
“The event is very student-driven and provides a lot of engagement,” said Hauppauge Middle School coding teacher Amy Thompson. “This experience not only gives the elementary school students an opportunity to participate with the middle school students, but it also takes place in the middle school’s new coding classrooms and mimics what they will be doing the day of the hackathon.”
