Welcomed by their teachers dressed as flight attendants, Bretton Woods third graders waited patiently outside their classroom turned airplane with homemade boarding passes and passports in-hand. The students entered the “plane” ready to “fly around the world” for their country celebration day. As part of their social studies curriculum, the third-grade students compared the life, government and culture of Kenya and Brazil to the United States. In a culmination of all they’d learned, teachers Ms. Haviland and Ms. Drake created a day in which students could “fly” to the different countries they’d learned all about and participate in cultural activities. After “boarding”, students sang, “Hello to All the Children of the World” to the parents and special guests in attendance. Students were able to bring one special guest on their “flight” and travel with them to different stations. At one station, students made Brazilian rain sticks and shared books they’d made on the country’s government, economy and culture with their guests. At another, the students and their guests played a Kenyan board game called Shisima. Lastly, they created a star decoration to represent the United States. After their world tour, students and their guests gathered around their portfolios, showcasing work from throughout the year.
