Hauppauge High School students learn the dangers of intoxicated driving

Hauppauge High School students had the opportunity to participate in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s “STOPPED” program, an interactive experience that showed the real dangers of impaired driving.

Officers set up a driving course in the school’s courtyard using “drunk buggies,” vision-distorting goggles and traffic cones to mimic real road obstacles. Students also attempted field sobriety tests, learning firsthand how impaired vision affects balance, coordination and judgment.

The program was a powerful reminder of how important it is to make smart, safe choices when you’re behind the wheel.
