Hauppauge Students Help Rescue Dogs Find Their "Furever" Homes
NYSSR Volunteer Steve Lefkowitz spoke with the Hauppauge students about the differences between animal shelters and rescue organizations, what a rescue group does, the importance of spay/neuter programs and the impact they have on rescue groups and shelters, etc. He additionally shared information about NYSSR’s sister organization the Homeless Puppy Club (HPC), which was created to give students, civic leaders and business owners the opportunity to share their love of animals by promoting animal rescue, responsible pet ownership, adoption of shelter animals and animal welfare.
Going forward, the Puppy Club will be sponsoring NYSSR dogs – making adoption posters and sharing these in their community to help the dogs find their “furever” homes. They additionally will be holding a donation drive and selling dog biscuits for the rescue group. "I think that what the presenters did was nice. We made posters to advertise the dogs for adoption," said Mikayla Barr.
“The students were excited to learn that they can help homeless pets. Oftentimes, students are turned away from volunteering because of their age,” stated Hauppauge Puppy Club Adviser Jennifer Shapiro. “NYSSR and the Homeless Pet Club gave each student an opportunity to get involved. It is a great program!”
Hauppauge’s Pause 4 Paws Puppy Club’s students share a true compassion for animals. Puppy Club members discuss issues that not only relate to animals – but parallel to themselves as well. Trust, belonging, stereotyping, compassion and service are some of the topics they explore.
